Character #AtoZChallenge 2025 fantasy

#AtoZChallenge 2025 letter C

[Writing Process post]

I generally make a character sheet for anyone who isn't a Tertiary character. Though sometimes more elaborate, it basically looks like this:

(Tomorrow, the actual story will begin.)

Character Name:

Nickname:

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS

Jewel color:  (Vital in this story only.)

Eye & Hair color/ style:

Build:

Style of dress:

Characteristics/ Mannerisms:

PERSONALITY TRAITS:

BACKGROUND:

INTERNAL CONFLICTS:

EXTERNAL CONFLICTS:

OCCUPATION/ EDUCATION:  (mostly irrelevant in this story)

Personality Contradiction (cruel but funny, sexy celibate) :

MISC NOTES:

Key dramatic question that will take whole story to answer:

Could Belp have prevented all this death, how, and if so-- why didn't he?
And what led Jaildarn to become the cause of such annihilation?

QUESTION -- Do you create character sheets when writing? Could you fill such a sheet out for yourself?

My A to Z 2025 theme is a fantasy story. (And some of the process of writing it as well.) 🕮

  1. Great tips for creating a character sheet. It's good to be back at the A-Z! Have an awesome challenge.

  2. Character profiles are a wonderful tool, especially for consistency. I create a profile for all my characters. Some are a bit more elaborate than others, and I treat the profile like a living document by updating it as the story or stories progress.

    Great post.

  3. I can imagine a character sheet is necessary when writing a story. I can't wait to see what happens.

  4. I've never been great at writing "character sheets." Not that I couldn't use them! Yours is nice and simple. I rarely know anything at all about my characters until they appear on my mental stage and reveal themselves or break the fourth wall to tell me some nugget of backstory that may matter in a few thousand words. I really ought to do a better job of taking notes, so that little details like eye color don't change halfway through the story.

  5. Because I enjoyed the Writer's Games for many years, I created a character creation spreadsheet with tons of traits and conflicts. I use a random number generator to go through each column and see what resonates with the character I want to create.

  6. Having this sheet available helps to keep mishaps from happening later in the story (like people suddenly changing names and hair colour...). Great tips.
