My theme for the 2026 A to Z Challenge is plotting Book Three in my Existence series — Cave of Existence.
Cave of Existence picks up where Proof of Existence left off. Heath had a revelation (thanks to Chance).
This is the fourth scene in the book. Heath is determined to find Hannah. He had been like a rudderless ship, washing into any port, often crashing against the rocks. (Hilarious, given his true nature.) But as his memories of his past lives slip from his rocky mind, he gains a sense of purpose. He feels that Hannah is the key to everything.
The first time we see Hannah is on a gangplank as she's leaving the cruise ship she was on. 🚢 Hannah is happily chatting with a nonverbal boy with cerebral palsy (who uses a computerised communication touchpad). His parents shed tears of joy, as the boy had never interacted so much with anyone.
Check that the opening has some primal urges:
- Survival (The Existence is working to keep life surviving, the Eyes in the Shadows are trying to end all life on Earth.)
- Hunger (We see Heath and Chance eating a light meal while standing and waiting.)
- Sex (😍😉😚 Give Heath a minute... )
- Protection of Loved Ones (No one is in immediate danger at the opening scene.)
- Fear of Death (No One is dying in the opening scene)
So we start by seeing the "flawed" world in which Hannah and Heath have been apart.

This novel will examine whether "love conquers all," meaning that external obstacles and internal struggles will test relationships while highlighting love as the driving force in overcoming these challenges, even if the victory comes at a high cost.
Have you ever felt like another person could be the key to unlocking your truest self?

Cave of Existence has a moral quandary about relationships. Heath's choices seem one way, but Hannah sees them another way.

I don't really have a playlist, but for this prompt, I made one for Fractions of Existence.

Chapter 1 takes place in 2003
I used Spotify for the first time. So, if you want to listen to the (totally unofficial, I have NO LEGAL RIGHTS to any of these, for an entertaining blog post ONLY) soundtrack, there's that.
I'm leaving the Travis video because most people know the lyrics from another artist, but the way Travis performs the song gives an entirely different vibe.

What would get you to instantly feel a strong connection to a character? (An elderly, kind, female character.)

April 1 question - If you have a playlist (or could put one together) that either gets you in the groove to write or fits with one of your books, what is it? What type of music or what songs?

My first thought on reading your plans for Cave of Existence was Plato's Cave - the thought experiment that questions Perception v. Reality, the need for Philosophy, and which is often applied to whether the Social Media we have today are mere curated shadows... Might be food for thought (pun intended!).
ReplyDeleteThere are a few tracks on your playlist I would happily include on mine - Chumbawumba come from Leeds which is near to me. I am sure they were amazed, perplexed and delighted that Tubthumping became such a hit, considering they are a very political (Anarchist) band and that song is not about drinking as I'm sure many superficial listeners imagined lol. Boulevard of Broken dreams - another great track. I will look at some of your other suggestions...
Good luck with the A to Z!
Hope you enjoy the music.
DeleteI picked Tubthumping for the "I get knocked down, But I get up again, You're never gonna keep me down" lyrics. Chapter 16 has several moments where it looks like it'll be okay, but no, but maybe, but no, but 🐇wtf... 😅
I'll have to get back to you on that! (ha ha ha...I had to say it! That was the funniest story ever. Poor HR lady...bless her heart♥)
ReplyDeleteWhen I plotted my first book I drew maps and tons of notes of where every thing was and the playlist was usually whatever popped into my head at the time...never made it that far with that project, even though it was published.... that was the ultimate goal. Who doesn't love Three Doors Down? "Here Without You"...wish he was still here.
Cheers,
Barbie
Glad I made you laugh.
DeleteWow! You have an extensive playlist. I prefer to write in silence and don't create them. Good luck with the A-Z challenge.
ReplyDeleteI made it for the prompt.
DeleteThat is quite the playlist! And variety of genres. I haven't listened to Hoobastank in years...
ReplyDeleteYes, it should certainly take you on a listening adventure.
DeleteA strong and kind character would definitely get my attention. Strength and kindness go hand in hand, and I think sometimes people don't see it that way. Hannah interacting with the boy like that would give me the warm fuzzies. Awesome playlist!
ReplyDeleteShe's got the emotional strength. It's sort of a mirror of Heath's physical strength.
DeleteYou know, I do feel like love overcomes all -- having raised kids and watched how they develop. Anyone can be redeemed with sincere, unfailing love.
ReplyDeleteWishing you endurace with the A-Z challenge. It's been a long time since I participated and I loved it, but whew! So much effort.
Hosting means extra effort, big push! I love it though. I love the blogging community.
DeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWow. You went in the opposite direction of most. Go you!
ReplyDeleteAnd I must be old. I only recognize one or two artists on your lists. LOL
I have a tendency to do that.
DeleteImpressive play list!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThe Travis version is totally different vibes. Can't wait to read book 3!
ReplyDeleteYou know it.
DeleteWhat I need to feel a connection to a character (doesn't matter if she is young or old) is action. Something must happen and she must be in the heart of it. I think you nailed it with her interaction with that disabled boy.
ReplyDeleteGood, good. Glad that works for you.
DeleteUnique this one, Lenni.
ReplyDeleteSharing a lovely fiction I recently read - The Correspondent by Virginia Evan’s.
Here’s my AtoZ post:

Thank you.
DeleteWell done.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWow, putting together a playlist for the book just for this post is above and beyond :) I'm curious: did that exercise teach you anything about the book?
ReplyDeleteYour A2Z question is interesting, too. I've occasionally had a strong and fairly instant connection to a person, though those have often been fleeting.
I can't honestly say that it did. But it was fun.
DeleteI'm amused by the list with "sex" and "protection of loved ones" back to back.
ReplyDeleteThe goals aren't always related.
DeleteWhat a terrific list! Best wishes on the AtoZ Challenge!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteHi there! Great start to the A to Z. Thanks to you I did indeed join again this year. I am an "elderly, kind female" so it wouldn't take much for me to relate. I need upbeat music to get me going on my creative flow. I won't pay for Spotify as I have a million songs on iTunes (or Music as it is now called). They range from Dean Martin to ACDC so there you go! Testing my link below. Hope it works.
ReplyDeleteJanet’s Smiles
Excellent!
DeleteI don't know what draws me to a character. I suppose introducing them in the right sort of scene helps.
ReplyDeleteOkay
DeleteWay to go above and beyond with the prompt, J! What a cool playlist!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou went detailed. I love Jimmy Eat World and Hoobastank.
ReplyDeleteGood choices.
DeleteI like your theme. I'm sure it would be a good exercise for us all to see how prominent those urges are in our books. It's cool you put together a playlist for this prompt and it's a good one. That Travis cover is a blast from the past - going back to around 99, I remember them playing it live on a session on Radio 1 in the UK, complete with hilarious backing vocals from the DJs. Then I'm sure they released it on a b side, too... great stuff!
ReplyDelete🤘 Yup yup, good tunes, good times.
DeleteLove that playlist!
