WORDPRESS COMMENT HACK

Something I've noticed with a bunch of WordPress blogs. After leaving a comment, an annoying box pops up. If you don't click something, your comment usually won't go through. But if you aren't interested in subscribing, you're stuck! Well, ha ha ha, I have discovered that if you click the white area under the prompt (which wants your email), that white area is "continue" or "continue reading." It FREES YOU from the pop-up, allows your comment to be submitted, and lets you get on with your life without being coerced into another subscription.
(Some WordPress sites leave the option visible, but others make the words match the background so they're 🙈 invisible invisible 🥸. An attempt to circumvent your consent and violate certain GDPR laws.)

I've found that the visible or invisible "Continue Reading" depends on whether people have a paid or a free WP account (with the paid version having the invisible lettering). It might be soincidence, just what I noticed.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I was using Wordpress self-hosted (paid) a few years ago, but never had that box. Maybe I opted out? Maybe that's new?
DeleteA bit late, but yes, I think it's new. I never had any problems with WP until about a year ago, when these Subscribe or Continue reading suddenly showed up ... and simultaneously I was requested to sign in on my long deleted WP account to comment at all - which was of course impossible (ten yerars is a long time). Clearing this took me almost three months back and forth with WP support :(
DeleteSounds like a nightmare.
DeleteReally appreciate that you included me on your list!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. 😊
DeleteWhat a great list! Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteDid not know about WordPress hiding the "continue reading" option. I usually click somewhere outside the pop up window. That makes it go away, too.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had good luck with doing that, as it seems to make my comment vanish. 🤷
DeleteBeautiful blog
